Healthy Mouth Healthy Life Podcast

My name is Carrie Ibbetson and I am a Registered Dental Hygienist with nearly 20 years experience in the dental world. I have worked as a dental assistant, front office coordinator, and as a dental hygienist. I like to think that because I have immersed myself in all facets of the dental office that I have a pretty rounded idea of what dentistry and dental offices are all about. One unique thing about my career is that I have spent many years working as a temporary fill in for offices (think substitute teacher). This has given me a really broad idea of what other offices are like, and has helped fuel my passion for amazing products and helping people connect the dots about their own health. For quite a few years I had a gypsy style mentality of living, traveling and exploring. Dentistry always allowed me to both pick up and move, or it allowed me to find work if I decided I was ready for a change. I would not change my experiences, but I can say that it has helped me to understand why many people find frustration or distrust in the dental offices they visit.

On this podcast episode, I talk with Christin Lincoln, RDH about the different types of hygienists you may find in every day offices, and things you can use to tell if a dental office is one that you want to invest in.  We piggy back on last week’s episode where Cindy Johnson and I talk about interviewing a health care provider to determine if they are the right fit for you and your values as a patient or employee.

We explore why oral health matters and how hygienists and oral health coaches help guide you to better overall health…not just oral health.

Christine talks about her website that is also designed for the consumer population and bacteria that triggers disease in the body, and the podcast she cohosts with a friend and fellow “momgienist”.

We discuss how someone’s bite can lead to gum disease (periodontal disease) and why it’s important to look at both gum disease and bite when it comes to having dental work performed or repaired. We talk Pankey dentistry, its benefits, and the oral systemic link.

This episode helps both the consumer and clinician alike. Listening to Christine will leave you feeling like you’ll want to find someone help you make sure your mouth is healthy for years to come.

In this episode of Healthy Mouth Healthy Life Podcast, I interview dental hygienist and mentor Cyndee Johnson on the importance of interviewing dental offices when you are choosing them both as an office to visit and an office to work with.

Cyndee is the owner of Scaler2Scheduler, a mentoring company that helps dental offices become aligned with how to take care of patients at the top level, and how to include the oral systemic connection along the way. This helps the patient not only have a more pleasant experience at the office, but it keeps them coming back and valuing what you have to say as a dental professional. Many people feel that dentistry is expensive or traumatic, but Cyndee is one of those people in the dental word striving to change the perception of dentistry and the lifesaving services that it can provide the public when including the oral systemic connection, and when treating the patient with the utmost respect and care.

Cyndee takes us through questions to ask a dental office that can help determine if they are potentially a right fit for you as a patient and a clinician, and the importance of the dental hygiene department functioning well in general.

She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to making a dental office run smoothly while providing the best care for their patients.  I’m thankful for her willingness to share this info and look forward to your thoughts once you’ve had a listen.

Hit reply and tell me what you thought!

Let’s face it; as an oral health coach, I spend a lot of time in groups answering questions about cavities and children. The stories I hear and the pictures I see break my heart daily. It also keeps me going when I feel like giving up.

Many dental professionals will tell you that flossing, fluoride and dental visits help banish cavities, while many natural healing people will state that diet and nutrition are the keys to healing and halting them.  And while both dental visits and nutrition can be beneficial to controlling cavities, I also feel that there are bodily habits and functions that often are overlooked by both sides of the oral health world which contribute greatly to cavities.

Stacey Fletcher, RDH, BS, OMT joins me on today’s podcast and we talk about how mouth breathing, tongue ties, breastfeeding and bacteria all play a major role in the cavities in kid’s mouths, and why (don’t worry we won’t be telling you that we think breastmilk causes them).

Not only is Stacey is a dental hygienist, she also is a myofunctional therapist and is finishing her clinical hours for lactation consulting.  She’s also enrolled in a holistic lactation course as well.

Stacey shares with us that her son’s mouth ties were what started her down the path of learning about these issues, and how that has helped shape her future thoughts on dental hygiene and cavity control/prevention in kids.

Have a listen as we explore these issues, why they contribute to cavities, and what parents can look for at home to help them determine if their child is perhaps suffering with these issues that could be contributing to the cavities their child is suffering with.

Know that if you are aware or suspect that your child is suffering with a tie, it does not necessarily mean that they are doomed to a mouthful of cavities. It may mean that you could use specific products and tools at home to control the bacteria, acids and dryness that increase the likelihood of cavities or increase the speed at which they seem to come on. Many parents will tell you that a serious cavity started as a small dot and seemed to rapidly take over the entire tooth.

As an oral health coach, this is the gap that I help close for you and your family.  The products and tools that you use at home matter more than you can imagine and the way you use them is equally important. 21 Days to a Healthy Mouth is an at home online program designed to give you the information that you need to create healthy smiles at home and help control the cavity epidemic we are dealing with these days. It’s packed with video’s a private FB group, and one on one sessions with me.

Many families have used this program, and have had wonderful success controlling cavities in their mouths.  Ask yourself, are you ready to be next?

Visit www.oralhealthcoaching.com for more information and to purchase the program!
